Shalini Singh

Dr. Shalini Singh attended Bishop Anstey High School and completed her B.A, M.Phil and Ph.D degrees at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad.  A recipient of first class honours and a post graduate scholarship, Shalini currently teaches Visual Arts at the Diego Martin Central Secondary School, Art History at the Fashion and Design Department, UTT and Ideas in Contemporary Art at the University of the West Indies. She has exhibited in six solo shows and several group exhibitions. Her works were exhibited in New York, Colombia, Guyana and Miami.

Shalini is intrigued by imagery of the subconscious, by the transience, by the surreal, by images from the mind, by the deafening silence of sound, by the dim glow of light and by the grandeur of life, depicted in its most subtle. She adds, “My paintings are based on experiences, images and ideas from the environment. I want to construct a free, lively, exotic, colourful, enchanting and decorative world with floating forms from the most surreal and spiritual to the most prosaic, sublime and bizarre.  I am inspired by celestial and cosmic elements, the unknown territory, the unseen, ancient mythology, symbols, artefacts, rituals, cave drawings, tribal communities and monumental works of civilisations forgotten, lost or recorded in history books.”
