In 1962 the Trinidad Hilton Hotel was about to open. A panel of respected artists was commissioned to appoint artists to fill this proud new expression of Trinidad. Artists selected to produce works were Sybil Atteck, Ken Morris, Leo Glasgow, Geoffrey Holder and Carlisle Chang amongst others. This collection is perhaps the single most coherent collection of Trinidad art of the period.
Chang was commissioned to do the extensive murals for the smaller meeting rooms at the hotel known as The Humming Bird Room and the Scarlet Ibis Room. He also prepared drawings from which Ken Morris prepared his beaten copper panels known as "Carnival". Chang attracted a huge response from his murals, and smaller panels were produced (see 4 panels of the period at the Normandie Hotel Collection). Many of these panels were sold abroad.
Carlisle Chang died in 2001. The 101 Art Gallery has had only 4 works by him available for sale since then. These panels are in extremely good condition and are rare on the market.
