PROVENANCE:
Private Collection U.K.
This watercolour, possibly dating from Cazabon's most productive and successful period (1850 - 1870), comes from a private collection in the U.K. It has all the identifiable aspects of Cazabon's brushwork, palette, composition and medium - both watercolour with gouache as highlighting, as well as scratching out.
The stylized palm trees are reminiscent of that in "Residence of the Late Charles Fabien" (pg 115) and "Fisherman and Boy, Corbeau Town"(pg 93). The calm water, with the shorebreakers highlighted with both gouache and scratching out is similar to all his coastal scenes - most especially "St Pierre, Martinique". (pg 91)
Cazabon lived in Martinique from 1862 to 1870 producing some of his finest works there. His eldest daughter Rose Alexandrine married and stayed in St Pierre after the family's return to Trinidad in 1870. It is believed that she and her family perished there in 1902 in the volcanic eruption, along with a large collection of Cazabon's works - making this scene one of only a very few extant of Martinique.
